The Challenge
Nordic Brands Collective manages a portfolio of six Scandinavian lifestyle brands—spanning outdoor apparel, home goods, and sustainable accessories. Each brand operates as a separate legal entity in its home market: two in Sweden (SEK), two in Norway (NOK), one in Denmark (DKK), and one serving the EU from Finland (EUR).
Before Exasum, the finance team maintained a sprawling Excel workbook with over 40 tabs. Currency conversions were manual, using rates pulled from the ECB website. Intercompany balances—from shared warehousing, cross-brand marketing, and IP licensing—required hours of reconciliation. The Group CFO spent nearly half of each month on consolidation instead of analysis.
"We were a €45 million group operating like we had no financial infrastructure," said their CFO. "Every month felt like starting from scratch."
The Solution
Exasum connected directly to each entity's Xero instance via API. The implementation team mapped all six charts of accounts to a unified group structure in two working sessions.
Key configuration included:
- Automatic daily FX rate pulls with monthly average and spot rate options
- Elimination rules for the 23 recurring intercompany transaction types
- Dimensional mapping for product categories across brands' different classification systems
- Version-controlled consolidation stages allowing draft-to-final workflow
Results
- Month-end close reduced from 12 days to 3 days
- Eliminated 40+ hours of manual Excel work per month
- First-ever real-time consolidated dashboard for board meetings
- Intercompany reconciliation now takes 20 minutes instead of 2 days
- Audit preparation time cut by 60%
For the first time, I can actually analyze our consolidated results instead of just assembling them. Exasum gave us back two weeks every month.
